Rolf has been treated poorly by his father as well as the other drakes in his clan, who hold on to the belief that dettes are little more than chattel. Due to concerns about his welfare, Rolf has been put under Leo's care. That hasn’t stopped his father from sending drakes around to court him. Rolf can barely stand to talk to any of them. The only man he is truly attracted to is Weston. Coyote shifter Weston has wanted Rolf almost from the day they met. He may not be a dragon, but thanks to his adopted brother Tyler, Weston knows how dragons are supposed to court. He’s been working hard to build a “hoard” and a nest worthy of a dette.
This sixth story set in the Empty Nests world of dragon shifters focuses on yet another couple finding love. Like all the books in the series, the focus in this story is on a new couple finding each other. However, the new characters exist in a world created by the previous volumes of the series, and some of the main characters from those stories play significant secondary roles in this book. You’ll be a bit lost if you haven’t read at least some of the previous stories in the series.
The storytelling alternates between Rolf and Weston’s points of view. If you’ve read some of the other books in the series, Rolf’s story is a familiar one. All his life, Rolf has been told he wasn’t worth anything except as the bearer of eggs for drakes, whom he needed to treat with respect even if they don’t earn it. Leo is helping Rolf realize his own self worth and encouraging him to explore his newfound freedom to pursue what he truly desires.
Weston isn’t what we typically expect from an “alpha” male. Yes, he’s a big, strong guy, but Weston isn’t motivated to simply dominate everyone. He is more concerned with ensuring people, especially Rolf, are happy. Weston wants Rolf, but it’s more important that Rolf choose him of his own free will.
