Review - The Uses of Illicit Art by Wendy Palmer

My rating:

Kit is an Artisan, a person with magical powers. His rather unusual gift is locks. He can open almost any door, safe, or vault. After he registered with the Artisan's Guild, which is supposed to protect him, his information was leaked, and the young man became the target of unsavory characters that coerced Kit into helping them with their illegal activities. Of course, that got him into trouble with the very guild that was supposed to keep him safe, so now he's in hiding.

Review - Twenty-Five Turns by Blaine D. Arden

My rating:

Many years ago, Eer let the love of their life leave the village to find their calling as a truth-seeker. Eer understood why Kat had to go away but couldn't bring themselves to abandon the community they'd come to call home. It was a decision they'd often regretted. Now, Kat has returned to the village and bought a troubled young man with them. It seems that Willim isn't the only stranger in the area.

Review - Sanctity by Toshi Drake

My rating:

Jax Trest is the chief engineer on board the Padua, so when the ship's mechanique Michael Collins gets stranded on an abandoned ship, it's Jax's job to try and support the squid-like ship's heart, even though humans can't bond with the hearts, in theory. When Collins is finally rescued and reunited with the heart, the loss of the connection Jax had with it sends him into a spiraling depression, made more difficult by the belief that he can't explain the problem to anyone.

Review - Judgement Dave by SI Clarke

My rating:

Lem is trying to settle into life aboard the star ship Teapot with her new alien friends, but she feels uncertain about her place. Unlike her crew mates, Lem doesn't think she brings any skills to support the running of the ship. Then the ship answers a call to help evacuate a colony that will otherwise be wiped out by a large asteroid impact, and Lem's skills as a project manager are tested to their limit.

Review - Left Hand of Dog by SI Clarke

My rating:

In an effort to reinvent herself, Lem moves to Canada with her dog Spock. The “new” Lem has adventures, only “kidnapped by aliens” wasn't exactly what she had in mind, let alone kidnapped by bounty-hunting bunnies. That's just the start of a mind-bending journey through space with Spock and Lem's new found friends. “Left Hand of Dog” is not so much space opera as space farce. While it's a bit silly, the story isn't so over the top as to not be somewhat believable.

Review - Livid Skies by SI Clarke

My rating:

The years of planning, meetings, and after-work discussions in the White Hart pub are over, and now it's almost time for the remainder of the colonists to land on Mars to put their plans for a self-sustaining Mars colony into action. But while the team may have left Earth behind and planned for a queer-friendly cruelty-free society, they're still bringing all their human faults with them. Not only do they face harsh conditions and natural disasters, there are also the kinds conflicts that come all to easily to humanity.

Review - Devon's Island by SI Clarke

My rating:

Earth, or more precisely, humanity, is headed for disaster. Seeing little chance that things will change, a mysterious consortium of nations and rich individuals decides to secretly build a colony on Mars, so that if the worst happens on Earth, humanity will survive. Two married scientists are hired to manage the project. They, and the team they assemble, have to come up with answers to some tough questions about how to ensure a human colony, which they have to assume will be cut off from Earth, can be viable.
