Kevin and Jeremy are still trying to work out the shape of their closer relationship with Maddox and Bryan. It’s hard to know where the new boundaries are without testing them, but they have to go at a pace that everyone, especially Bryan, is comfortable with. There’s nothing Kevin likes more than pushing Bryan’s boundaries, but he is also very aware of how his friend reacts if Kevin goes too far. If there’s one thing you can be sure of with these four, they will surprise you.
This tenth(!) book of the Loving series continues the evolution of the relationship between couples Kevin and Jeremy, and Maddox and Bryan. Kevin and Jeremy have a complicated past, so you really need to read all of the books of the series to get some of the subtle references made in this story. The dynamic of the four young men is drifting into polyamorous territory, although the text never mentions that term. The two couples remain couples, but they’re finding some of their sexual needs are fulfilled by pairing up with one of the men from the other partnership.
The narration is mostly from either Kevin or Jeremy’s points of view. Jeremy seems to have fallen into the role of being the only adult among the four. Maddox is a strong dominant, but he’s often too easily amused by the two subs’ antics to reign them in. Jeremy’s whole life has been about keeping Kevin safe and giving him what he needs. Recognizing that Kevin has needs that Jeremy doesn’t feel comfortable fulfilling, but Maddox can, has been a challenge, but he’s learned to trust Maddox completely.
Kevin remains as outrageous as ever. He’s one of those people that, once they get an idea, they have to run with it, even if it’s not in their own self interest. As Jeremy often laments, Kevin has no instinct for self-preservation. However, Kevin has learned to be more careful around Bryan. Having “broken” his best friend at least once, Kevin tries very hard not to push Bryan too far. The trouble is, that line may now be a moving target.
