Kevin and Jeremy are settling into the life they’ve built away from their abusive mother. Jeremy has graduated and is working full time on the business he started, which is doing well enough for the couple to consider moving to a bigger place so he will have room to work. Kevin still has a few more years of school and has yet to decide on a specific career path, but there’s still time for that. The pair are far from alone. They have a network of supportive friends that have formed a found-family for the brothers. Things are going well, but the threat that the past will once again rear it’s ugly head is always there.
This second compendium volume of the long-running Loving series combines the novella-length installments originally released as books four to six. The books flow into each other with little or no time gaps between them, so this “boxed set” easily reads as one long-ish novel. As you can probably guess, these books are so tightly coupled that you really have to read all of them in their published order, which is another good reason to read the boxed sets.
As in all the books so far, the narration alternates between Kevin and Jeremy’s points of view from one chapter to the next. Jeremy is the “adult” in the relationship, constantly worrying about whether they have enough money to live on as well as in case of emergencies. It’s all about keeping Kevin safe, which has been his sole concern since he was 16. Jeremy’s challenge is also keeping in mind that he needs to keep Kevin happy, which means taking time out from work to dominate his submissive brother.
Kevin is a very engaging character. Most of the time, he’s a classic brat in D/s terms, which provides a lot of lighter moments to the stories, although the word “brat” is only used once in this set. However, the happy-go-lucky college boy personality soon disappears when the specter of their parents reappears. The threat looms throughout the story, although there are few actual confrontations in the three books.
