book cover for The Love of Wicked Men

Review - The Love of Wicked Men (5 & 6) by Brandon Shire

My rating: * * * *

Note: This book was published in serial form. This review is of the fifth and sixth episodes, which completes the series. The twists and turns come fast and furious as this six-part series races to its conclusion. Sid and Jack are no longer playing cat and mouse with each other, although both men now realize they’re being played. The question is: by whom? These last two novelettes in the series really are page-turners.

Review - The Spell by Alan Hollinghurst

My rating: * * * *

Alex travels down to Dorset for a weekend visit to his old boyfriend Justin, who is now ensconced in an idyllic English cottage with his new lover Robin. It’s a rather daunting prospect for the rather shy and introverted Alex. Joining the three for the weekend is Robin’s son Danny. The weekend itself proves relatively uneventful, but in the months that follow the four mens’ lives become intertwined in an evolving, and sometimes revolving, relationship.

Imagine if you will that the mythical gods of the ancient world — Greek, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, etc. — were all real, and interacted with each other. They form the elite society of the time, and they even have their own boarding school where the younger gods can learn about history, warfare and seduction — all the godly arts. As private schools catering to the rich and powerful, narturaly there’s a secret society that nobody is supposed to know about, yet everyone seems to be a member of.

Review - Castrato: A Vampire's Redemption: Book One by Cypher Andrews

My rating: * * *

Let’s start out with the blurb for this book, since it might be described as a little misleading: You might think it’s a fairly obvious statement, but most vampires actually enjoy what they are. They revel in it. Nathan Bane is a vampire who doesn’t want to be a vampire. “You know, I just figured if it was my fate to become a monster, at least I could control what kind of monster I would become.

book cover for Is It True What They Say About Black Men?

Review - Is It True What They Say About Black Men? by Jeremy Helligar

My rating: * * * *

Note: Since I’ve been in the same places and similar situations to the author of this book, this review will be a little more personal than usual. Entertainment journalist Jeremy Helligar leaves his job and life in New York to travel the world. In this collection of blog posts, articles and musings we follow Jeremy as he settles first in Buenos Ares, then Melbourne, with long stints in Bangkok. As Jeremy writes about his efforts to connect to the men as well as the places he lives in, the comparisons to “Sex and the City” are obvious and not missed on the author.

book cover for The Cat Wore Electric Goggles

Review - The Cat Wore Electric Goggles by Ian Hutson

My rating: * * * *

If P.G. Wodehouse and Douglas Adams had a love child, the result would probably be Ian Hutson. This collection of twelve short stories combines the whimsical humor of both authors, the science fiction bent of Adams and the nostalgia for an earlier era of Wodehouse. The title story, The Cat Wore Electric Goggles, is a tale of the exploration of a mysterious planet. Although set in the future, the technology has a decidedly 1960s feel to it.

Review - Carnal Sacraments: A Historical Novel of the Future Set in the Last Quarter of the 21st Century by Perry Brass

My rating: * * *

In the not too distant future, the world is even more corporatized and consumerist than it is now. “The System” as it’s called, is all about creating the next “new” thing that people will believe they need to make them happy, at least for a while. Jeffrey Cooper is a key cog in the machine. His ability to discern what will make a product appeal to the market it’s targeted at makes him valuable to the nameless, faceless people who run the system.
