Review - Wild Rose, Silent Snow by Angel Martinez

Rowan and his brother Snowden live on an island in one of the many lakes of (one presumes) Minnesota. The twenty-something fraternal twins are on their own since their parents died. With minor but none-the-less limiting disabilities due to a childhood bout with encephalitis, they rely heavily on each other. With few resources, the dead of winter can be trying but they still manage to get by. Things go from grim to weird when a large grizzly bear that seems eager for human companionship shows up.

The world’s greatest detective harbors a dark secret: Ever since his school days at Eton the seemingly cold-hearted detective has harbored an irresistible attraction to Dragos, a young Roma man as impulsive and tempestuous as Holmes is calculating and reserved. The dark and dangerous Dragos has a tendency to make Holmes forget all logic, when the two are together.

Review - Ganymede: Abducted by the Gods by Wendy Rathbone

In Greek mythology, Ganymede was a young man or boy born in the area that would become Troy. He was supposedly so beautiful that the god Zeus, chief among all the immortals, kidnaps and brings Ganymede to Olympus to serve as his cup-bearer and become immortal himself. This retelling of the classic story is given from Ganymede’s point of view, and puts a science fiction spin on the tale. Although not original, the idea that the gods of Greek mythology were aliens from a technologically advanced civilization is still well played.
Review - Strait Laced by Kate Aaron

It’s the ultimate opposites-attract romance: Shy corporate climber Paul, who isn’t in the closet but isn’t quite comfortable being too far out of it, is hit on by go-go boy Ben, a tattooed young man from a working class family who is definitely out and proud. Is there any chance of a relationship between two so very different men, or is the more or less homeless Ben just looking for a place to bed down?

Review - Blood Money by Zen DiPietro
My rating:
Mild-mannered trader Cabot Layne agrees to under-take another mission for Chief of Security Fallon of Dragonfire Station. The task seems simple enough: locate someone who is also a well known trader, who was helping Fallon’s team, yet has dropped out of communication. To help him out, Cabot once again enlists the aid of his old friend Omar, and reluctantly Omar’s sister Nagali, who is also Cabot’s ex-wife. Fallon sends one of her team, Peregrine, as well, making for a rather strange quartet.

Although borne into the royal family of Slorex, Sūnder has always been an outcast, whom his real father cannot even publicly acknowledge because he is Faelyn, a magical being commonly believed to be destined to turn evil. He has spent his life trying to prove people wrong. Gabriel is an earthling who was abandoned by his parents at the age of 16 and has spent his life avoiding close relationships with anyone who might hurt him again.

Review - Sin Against the Race by Gar McVey-Russell

Kindly note: The author generously provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Alfonso starts a new year a college in a deep funk. Carleton, his cousin, best friend and mentor, died of complications from AIDS over the summer, Carleton’s close friend Eddie is gay-bashed in the local park, and the clinic Carleton helped found is destroyed by fire just before classes start. On top of all that, Alfonso is struggling to reconcile his own identity as a gay man of color with his father’s expectations of him.

Review - Kings Rising by C. S. Pacat
My rating:
Damen and Laurent are ready to risk everything, including their lives and their newfound relationship, to get their kingdom’s back. Perhaps the biggest risk of all is Damen’s true identity, which was on the verge of being revealed at the end of the previous book, Prince’s Gambit. After the previous installment ended, it seemed like all the plot lines were coming together and I thought I had a good idea of how this last book might play out.

Note: If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, then kindly beware this review may contain spoilers. Daniel may be the newly discovered prince of the Cubi in North America, but the kingdom he will inherit is in serious danger. The human military has attacked the refuge where many cubi lived, the cubi have dispersed to safe houses around the U.S. and as our story opens Daniel is still “hiding out” at his mother’s house, along with his advisers and lovers Caledon and Seldon, and a host of others.
Review - The City of Rocks by Don Travis
My rating:
Time for another adventure with private detective BJ Vinson. The case this time involves the theft, or “duck-knapping”, of a prize duck from a ranch in the boot-heel of New Mexico near the Mexican border. As BJ digs into the crime, the border, and what comes across it plays a key part in unraveling the case. Like the previous books in the series, “The City of Rocks” has strong element of travelogue about it as it explores yet another part of the state of New Mexico.
