Christopher returns home from work early one day to find his boyfriend in bed with not one, but two, other men. Incensed by the betrayal, Chris sells the house and his business and moves to an isolated community high in the mountains, where he buys an old church in need of repair. To get some tools, Chris visits the town’s hardware store, where he meets Jarrod and his daughter Mary. Jarrod is very helpful and attractive, but Chris doesn’t think he’s ready to jump into another relationship, and Jarrod might be straight, anyway. But, even as the two become good friends, Chris begins receiving threatening phone calls and strange things start to happen.
“Searching for Love on the Moon” is a paranormal romance set in South Africa. The ghostly angle takes a while to become apparent. It’s not immediately obvious that one of the people Chris meets in town isn’t what they appear to be. At its heart, this is a story about two men who have been hurt in the past learning to trust again and open their hearts.
The story is told entirely from Chris’ point of view. His reaction to the betrayal by his boyfriend seems a little extreme, but it isn’t out of keeping with the person we get to know as the story progresses. The story is set in South Africa, and it feels like there may be some cultural differences which made it difficult for me to connect with the characters.
We only get to know Jarrod through Chris’ eyes. He’s a hard man to get a bead on. Jarrod is at least partly closeted, which can explain why he goes hot and cold on Chris, but it still seems overdramatic. The one thing that comes through with absolute clarity is Jarrod’s care for his daughter, Mary. That alone makes him an admirable character.
