Aspic recently moved to Merseton where he works in the local herb shop. He’s suddenly alone at the counter one day when Geoffrey the Very Strange walks in the door. That’s not his real full name, but it’s what everyone in the village calls him. Geoffrey may be odd, with his attempt to practice necromancy without blood magic, but there’s something Aspic finds endearing about the young man. Geoffrey also finds the pink-haired half demon alarmingly attractive, but necromancers don’t have friends, let alone boyfriends.

“Geoffrey the Very Strange” starts a new series of relatively unconnected fantasy stories set in the small village of Merseton. The town and surrounds are populated by various fantasy beings, such as pixies, gnomes, centaurs, griffins, and assorted others. It’s an accepting sort of place without much of the prejudices found in the rest of the world.

Aspic is a relative newcomer to the village. As a half-demon, he got the blame whenever anything went wrong around him, so Aspic’s life has been one of moving from place to place and never making any true friends. Until he comes to Merseton. The sense of community he experiences is almost over-whelming. He finds himself surrounded by beings who care about him.

The narration alternates between Aspic and Geoffrey’s points of view. Geoffrey is quite the curious character indeed. Once we get his full story, he is a very sympathetic person as well. He relates some of his story to Aspic, and we also get more background from his grandmother. As you might expect from this author, this is a very light story told with a whimsical sense of humor.
