Edmund has been on the run from Hunters for a long time. The Hunters are single-minded in their pursuit of magical beings, whom they tear apart when they catch them. It’s not like Edmund is a danger to anyone. He may be a vampire, but he’s a vampire fruit bat. The only thing he sucks the life out of is ripe fruit. In desperation, Edmund flees to Mereston, although he’s not sure he will be welcomed even there. The town night watchman Ro is disturbed by reports of a vampire at Mrs. Pickles boarding house, but is curious about what he finds. Ro quickly determines that Edmund is no threat, and the rest of the town quickly follows suit.

This second story featuring the village of Mereston focuses on two new characters: newcomer Edmund and the recently appointed night watchman Ro. The story is essentially stand-alone, but you’ll have a better background on the quirky inhabitants of the town if you’ve already read the first book. These are light romances full of offbeat humor.

Edmund as a character is a very clever invention. A vampire fruit bat, who would have thought? Edmund’s story comes out bit by bit over the course of the story. He’s been through quite an ordeal, which explains why he is so unsure of himself and slow to trust people. Underneath it all, though, is a very gentle soul.

Ro is Edmund’s love interest and protector. He is a relative newcomer to Mereston as well as a bit of an outcast himself. It takes a while before we get the story of Ro’s “passenger,” as he calls it. Like Edmund’s own story, it’s a bit weird and not at all what you might expect.
