The Resistance's second in command, Garret, has always had a bit of a crush on the group's doctor, Maxwell. He spends what little spare time he has with the medic, and even if Maxwell doesn't return his feelings, he still likes doing things for the overworked physician. Maxwell is finding it increasingly difficult to resist Garret's advances. He's gone years without the comfort of another person's touch, but he knows Garret would reject him if Maxwell revealed his secret.

Misha was orphaned at a young age and grew up in the “trenches” of lower Davlova, where the poorest citizens scratch out a living without technology while the high-born “purebloods” live in luxury behind the thick protective walls of the inner city on the top of the hill. In some ways, Misha was lucky. He was taken in by one of the clans, criminal gangs that ran all sorts of operations in the city.

Security officer Mitch is involved in a life-threatening incident while off duty. He says he's fine, but he's really not. Mitch decides to seek comfort from his old friend Basil, only Basil is with Rich, and everything Mitch does seems to annoy him. Mitch starts to make a mess of things once again, but Rich seems to understand what's going on. It appears that Mitch might finally have the thing he's been dreaming of for years.

Silas has lived with his lover Eshan on a remote space station for as long as he can remember. Eshan takes care of Silas' sexual needs, which keeps him happy. But then, one day, the station is boarded by a man hell-bent on finding something he thinks Eshan has. The man kills Eshan and thinks he's killed Silas, but the young man somehow survives and finds himself on a planet occupied primarily by lizard-like refugees.

“Buzz” is an ex-space marine who now works private security gigs for the human-centered coalition of allied planets. Thomas Cutter is an engineer with a reputation for getting difficult jobs done. “Cutter” also isn't exactly what he appears to be. Buzz is enjoying a little R&R after a recent job when he meets Cutter, and the sparks fly between the two. Both end up working on a salvage mission together.

On his day off, Rich decides to drop in on his friend Liam. Upon arriving at the converted super yacht that serves as Liam's laboratory, Rich finds his friend tied up and apparently being tortured by someone he doesn't know. If there's one thing that can overcome Rich's extreme aversion to violence, it's seeing one of his friends being hurt. Fortunately, Liam manages to calm Rich down before he can do any real damage to Jordan, another friend of Liam's that knows the young scientist likes it rough.

His latest master has been shot dead, along with his gang of thugs, and so Mauve is now ‘evidence’ in the investigation.

It has been nearly a year since Lord Teo left his mate Raphael at the Mars colony. They both agreed that some time apart would be good. It would allow them to come to terms with the many changes the human Raphael's presence has wrought on Teo and the crew of his Chi'NoSa ship. It has been a difficult time for Raphael. Their mental link allows them to know that each other is healthy, but Raphael misses his lover's touch.

Albert St. John Rembrandt is just “Bertie” to most people. He comes from one of the richest families in the six worlds occupied by humans. However, he was disowned by his father, the Duke, for refusing to marry a prince who preferred women. Bertie is now the Stationmaster for Tolari Station. The Tolari were humans, once, but were taken from the earth by aliens who made genetic modifications so they could survive on a planet rich in toxic heavy metals.

Review - Priest and Pariahs by J. Alan Veerkamp

Priest is the chief pilot of the Santa Claus and rather enjoys his reputation as one of the ship's bad boys. His schemes aren't always well thought-out, and when he gets caught, he takes his punishment with good humor. Costa is a “para-human,” a genetic mutation that emerged on earth and gave those with it some extraordinary powers. Para-humans sparked fear in “normal” people. They were soon seen as less-than-human, and either enslaved or locked away in special prisons that could control their powers.
