Review - The Bisti Business by Don Travis
My rating:
Private investigator BJ Vinson from “The Zozobra Incident” is back with another case. This time, BJ is hired by a rich, and rather homophobic, California wine maker who wants him to find his son, and his boyfriend. The two lost contact while on a vacation in New Mexico. Did something happen to them, or is the son just avoiding his disapproving father? This second outing for BJ Vinson lives up to the first.

Review - The Zozobra Incident by Don Travis
My rating:
BJ Vinson is a private investigator and former police detective based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When BJ’s ex boyfriend Del comes to him for help, he approaches the case with mixed feelings. It seems that the rent boy who broke the two up is blackmailing Del with some racy photos of the two. What seems to be a relatively simple case at first eventually escalates into a deadly game of cat and mouse where everyone, including BJ’s new love interest, is a suspect.

Review - Dim Sum Asylum by Rhys Ford
My rating:
In an alternate San Francisco, the human and magical worlds have collided in a big, messy way. Fairies, dragons and other magical creatures mix with humans, and it’s the job of the San Francisco Police Department’s Arcane Crimes unit to make sure nobody misuses magic for nefarious purposes. The Chinatown headquarters, known by its officers as the “Dim Sum Asylum”, is where most of the action is, and where Detective Roku calls home.
Review - The Curse of the Blue Scarab by Josh Lanyon
My rating:
In this retelling of the original 1912 classic “The Mummy”, Dr Quentin Armiston is a middle-aged physician whose Edwardian-era London practice consists mainly of the cooks, chauffeurs, housekeepers and other assorted servants of the upper classes. He is single, but has never really felt lonely, and besides, his true desires are the kind that could land you in jail. One day, a young gentleman comes to get Armiston to attend the death of his friend.

Review - Playing With Fire by Dirk Greyson
My rating:
Someone is killing people in the affluent suburb where Jim Crawford is the lead detective. At a loss for clues in the seemingly random shootings, Jim enlists the aid of psychologist Dr Barty Halloran to try and get inside the head of the killer. Barty does more than get inside the killer’s head and uncover clues to who he might be, he gets under Jim’s skin as well. The nerdy professor is just Jim’s type, although he is still smarting from his last relationship with a college teacher.

Review - Santuario by G.B. Gordon
My rating:
In the distant future, on a far-away planet, there are two human colonies with distinctly different cultures. The Skanians were the original colonists, apparently descended from Scandinavian stock. The later arrivals crash-landed more than 200 years before this story begins. For reasons nobody seems quite sure of, the newcomers were isolated on an island they call Santuario in the sweltering tropics, where they’ve had little contact with the Skanians. Alex is a police lieutenant in a small coastal village on Santuario.

Review - Hitting Black Ice by Heloise West
My rating:
Please note: An electronic review copy of this book was kindly supplied by the author. Hunter is still recovering from what could well be described as the worst break-up, ever. He avoids anything that might lead to a serious relationship to keep him from getting hurt again. His work as a physicians assistant in the emergency room helps to keep him busy as well as making him feel useful. Unfortunately, the presence of receptionist Shawn doesn’t help.

Review - Stranger on the Shore by Josh Lanyon
My rating:
The kidnapping of four year-old Brian Arlington twenty years ago was a major news story at the time it happened. Although a man was convicted of the crime, Brian was never found. The story intrigues Mid-western crime reporter Griffin Hadley, and while the family has always resisted previous authors’ attempts to write about the kidnapping, family patriarch Jarret Arlington agrees to cooperate with Griffin to help revive interest in the story and perhaps find out what really happened to Brian.

Review - Consent
My rating:
You could be forgiven for thinking we had seen the end of the stories featuring detective Gavin DeGrassi. At the conclusion of the last book, Safeword, he was retired from the police force after yet another harrowing case that nearly cost him his life, his home, and his Dom Ben. But when Gavin’s sister-in-law and former partner Myah is snatched from a supermarket parking lot, he can’t just sit on the sidelines.
Review - First You Fall
My rating:
Kevin Conner is a high priced call boy who enjoys his work. The petite blond twink has a steady base of undemanding clients, and a drag queen pimp who carefully screens new customers. Kevin’s ‘job’ is ostensibly in aid of furthering his education in psychology, but with his attention deficit disorder it’s easy for Kevin to stay in the moment. Everything changes when Kevin’s friend and mentor falls to his death.
