Content creator Tayler is getting a little bored with his work lately, so he decides to shake things up by sailing around the world solo. Things go well enough for a few days, but then he is caught in a violent storm. Tayler fears for his life when the boat suddenly beached on a small island. The island appears deserted and Tayler has no way to call for help. However, it soon becomes clear that he isn’t completely alone. Some creature also calls the island home, a sort of half man, half tentacled monster. Tayler is equally attracted and repelled by the creature, who seems to have a hypnotic effect on the young man. Does it want to eat him, or use him for something else?

This short novelette is a tentacled take on classic mermaid stories. In this case, it’s a merman, with a male upper body and octopus-like tentacles where the legs should be. The creature also seems to have the ability to hold Tayler in thrall. The story builds steadily up to the point where Tayler finally gives in to his desire for the creature, resulting in one high heat scene.

The story is presented as a sort of journal written by Tayler after his phone dies to provide notes for his future content. We don’t learn too much about him other than he seems to be one of those influencers that jumps into things he thinks might gain him followers without really doing any homework. There’s no mention of a radio on his boat, and he seems surprised that his phone doesn’t get any signal once he’s out of sight of land, before the phone stops working entirely.

The creature is the only other character in the story and he doesn’t speak, at least not in any way Tayler understands. We don’t know why he takes an interest in Tayler or what his goal is.
