When he was fourteen, Kevin was almost kidnapped, but his older brother, Jeremy came to the rescue. The incident throws the brothers closer than they’ve ever been. Kevin has nightmares, and his savior Jeremy is the only one who can keep them at bay. For his part, Jeremy can’t forget what might have happened and doesn’t like letting his little brother out of his sight. Four years later, the two are still sharing a bed, although they keep that fact a secret from their parents. Kevin and Jeremy independently realize that what they feel for each other is more than brotherly love or dependence. They make plans to go off to college together, away from their parents’ increasingly toxic behavior.

The Loving books are a long-running series following two brothers who form a deep relationship with each other. The original stories are novella-length. This volume combines the first three books into a single read, which makes for a more complete way to start the series. You’ll get the full background on how the two were thrown together by a traumatic event and then grew even closer as their parents mishandled what was going on between them.

The narration switches between Kevin and Jeremey from one chapter to the next. We first meet Kevin on that fateful day he was almost kidnapped while walking home from school at fourteen. It’s understandable he would be traumatized by the event and seek solace from the one person who came to his rescue, his brother Jeremy. Their relationship becomes a bit codependent, but their parents only seek therapy for Kevin.

It’s a little mind-boggling that Kevin and Jeremy’s parents would assume the worst of Jeremy. As is often the case with parents and children, the parents’ attempts to force them apart only pushes Kevin and Jeremy closer together. It’s no wonder the young men want to move out on their own once Kevin graduates high school and gets accepted to college. Once away from parental control, the two are free to express their true feelings for each other, which is the start of their sexual relationship.
