Grant doesn’t do relationships. That’s the beauty of living in a tourist town, he has his pick of hot guys who will only be around for a week, and no man ever turns down an offer of a night with Grant. It’s a small town, so Grant has a reputation and all of his friends know he doesn’t hook up with locals. They even joke about it. One night at the bar, the jokes turn into a challenge: Can Grant even get a local of his friends’ choosing to go home with him? Marc is still smarting after the breakup of his marriage. He’s determined not to be hurt again, and that means keeping everyone at arm’s length, especially people like Grant.
This contemporary romance is set in the fictional Lake of the Ozarks resort town called “Flaming” Missouri. It’s supposed to be the start of a series with the first installment focusing on the seeming opposites of Grant and Marc. It’s a bit of a slow burn romance, as Marc is very gun shy about relationships, especially with someone with the reputation Grant has, while Grant is confused by the mixed signals he’s getting. There are more than a few dramatic twists and turns as the relationship develops. You can’t be absolutely sure where it will end up until you it gets there.
The narration alternates between Grant and Marc. We meet Grant first, when he’s out with friends in their local bar as they’re discussing Grant’s penchant for one-night-stands with tourists. Grant initially comes across as a young man who is simply enjoying playing the field. He has the looks to get almost anyone to agree to take him home. However, as we get to know him, Grant has some personal history that probably motivates his behavior.
Grant’s family issues are nothing compared to Marc’s. We learn about his problems with his mother early on, and those issues are the source of many of the dramatic twists of the story. The man himself is remarkably well adjusted given what he’s been through with his family.
