Jim lost an arm in an IED attack, so after a long stay in the hospital to recover, he’s leaving the army. At least it will give him more time to spend with his long-term boyfriend, Andy. Unfortunately, Jim arrives home to find that Andy has dumped him and moved on. With nowhere else to go, Jim calls up his dependable old army buddy “Horse” to see if he can stay with him until he figures things out. Jim has always had a bit of a crush on Horse, but he doesn’t know if his friend feels the same way.
“Finding the Way Home” is a fast-moving friends-to-lovers romance. For a while, it looks as if there will be no dramatic turn of events. The two men even joke about wanting a drama-free life, but Jim’s past comes back to surprise him in the most unexpected way. It all gets a bit crazy, but not in an unbelievable way.
The narration alternates between Jim and Horse’s points of view. For much of the story, it’s just the two of them, but we don’t get a lot of background for either man. We meet Jim first, and he comes across as a headstrong personality, which is something that helps him in dealing with his new prosthetic arm. The challenges seem to be very realistically portrayed.
We get even less of a feel for Horse. Like Jim, he might be best described as a “good ol’ boy”, but that’s about as much as we get. He is definitely a good friend to have, especially for Jim. The two seem perfectly matched once they get together.
