River and Eris are back together again after a fight over Eris’ attitude, but River still can’t accept the limitations that being Eris’ consort would place on him. To everyone’s surprise, it’s the king that comes up with the perfect solution: make River a prince, a near-equal to Eris. It’s an elegant solution that removes the barriers to the two being together in every way possible. The one problem it creates comes from a surprising quarter. Before he can deal with any new problems, River needs to deal with Sebastien. The Guardian keeps sending River on missions which seem designed to get the Ambassador killed.

This book concludes The Ambassador series, centered on River, an everyman human who puts himself in danger to safeguard his friends and their families. River’s nemesis in the series is the Guardian Sebastien. The Guardian was supposed to be the protector of Earth, but Sebastien has ended up terrorizing the population, resulting in widespread unrest. River has agreed to be Sebastien’s ambassador to other worlds under his control to protect his friends. While Sebastien’s missions seem aimed at getting River killed, he is skilled enough to avoid that fate, and even enlist some potential allies along the way. It’s not much of a spoiler to reveal that the ‘Sebastien problem’ ultimately gets resolved in this story, but there’s a deus ex machina quality to the ending.

River has been a hero typical of the type this author creates. He is, in many ways, an ordinary human, but he has an extraordinary strength of character. I think most people would give up in River’s place, or spiral into PTSD as River sometimes is on the verge of doing. Oddly, while a description of River’s exploits may make him sound too good to be true, he doesn’t come off that way in the text itself.

Crown Prince Eris, River’s love interest, appears throughout this book but doesn’t play a very significant role in how the story develops. River’s significant interactions are with his adoptive parents and his best friend Ben, whom River managed to rescue from Earth.
