Lance and Sloan met and became lovers when they were in the army. When Lance is severely injured by a land mine, leaving him disabled, he breaks up with Sloan. Lance doesn’t want to be a burden on his lover. After being discharged, Lance ends up at the Rockin’ W ranch for his long rehabilitation, which includes learning how to work with his guide dog, since he’s now blind. Sloan isn’t willing to give up on Lance. He gets a job with the police near the ranch and is determined to win his lover back.

This sequel to The Wounded Warrior takes place some time later, after the rehabilitation center set up by Luke, Matt and Rory is fully operational. The main characters from that first book appear in this one, but you could probably read this story without having read the first volume of the series and not be missing much. This story is much gentler than the first book, without the gun battles that marked that story.

It’s easy to sympathize with Lance’s predicament, even if you don’t agree with all his choices. His blindness means that many of the options he may have had for a post-military career are now closed to him. He isn’t even sure what degree of independence he’ll have when his rehabilitation is complete. You can understand why Lance thinks Sloan would be better off without him.

Sloan was injured in the same blast that disabled Lance, but his injuries were not debilitating. He can still work and get around without difficulty. That doesn’t mean Sloan wasn’t affected. He has scars, both physical and emotional, from what happened. Effectively stalking Lance is a little bit crazy, as several of Sloan’s friends point out, but he doesn’t care. He wants Lance in his life and he’ll do whatever it takes to convince his lover that Sloan is around for the long haul.
