Ben has been unsettled since the start of term, when the new pledge Aidan joined his fraternity. It’s not that the chapter president Foster has made Aidan his personal sex toy, using the young man at every opportunity. It’s that Aidan seems to actually enjoy being used. The greater the humiliation, the more Aidan seems to get off on it, and he shows no shame afterward. Ben can’t help wondering what that must be like. The feelings Aidan evokes are all very bewildering. Which is why he is looking forward to the Thanksgiving break. His family may take every opportunity to express their disappointment with Ben, but he’s used to it. Even his twin brother Nate seems to avoid Ben, who always feels second-best compared to Nate.
We’re once again in the dark recesses of “twincest” territory with this story of identical twins who develop a sexual relationship. Ben and Nate may be identical physically, but their personalities are very different. The point of view alternates between Ben and Nate by chapter, so we get some insight into both men’s thinking.
His upbringing in an old-money New England family meant Ben easily fell into the “alpha male” mentality expected of him. It isn’t until Aidan joins the fraternity that Ben begins to question what he really wants. Maybe being submissive doesn’t mean you’re weak.
We don’t get to know Nate quite as well. It seems the young man has never come to terms with why he keeps his twin brother at a distance. Not until Ben finally forces the issue. Nate’s story isn’t quite as convincing as Ben’s, but it doesn’t stretch things far enough to break the fantasy.
