Melis is the god of bees and honey, and desire. He’s among the youngest of the gods and a bit of an outcast. King Antero is one of the god’s most ardent followers. Antero is reputed to be very handsome, but has yet to find a suitable companion, someone who wants him for who he is rather than because he’s the king. He prays to Melis often for help in his quest. The curious little god decides to see the king for himself. Melis enters the king’s palace at night, unseen by humans, and finds his way to Antero’s bed chamber. The king looks as attractive as everyone says. Melis is drawn to him in a way no other being, god or man, has made him feel. Can desire have desires?

This short novella really comprises just one scene. Much of it is a discussion of love and desire, which reminded me a bit of Plato’s Symposium. The writing of the dialog makes what isn’t said almost as important as what is spoken. Eventually, things heat up between the two, as Melis finally gives in to the passion Antero offers.

The scene is narrated entirely from Melis’ point of view. Of course, as a god, even a little one, Melis knows Antero’s thoughts, so we get to know him almost as well. Melis has a typical youthful disdain for the elder gods, especially the way they treat humans as playthings. He has vowed never to treat them like that, which is why Antero’s lust causes him so much conflict. As you can probably guess, there’s a strong “fated love” theme to the story.
