Spoiler alert: This review of the third Pykh book may contain spoilers for the first two volumes.
Carter may have finally solved his communication problem, but that leads to a whole new set of challenges, like explaining to his two mates that he can’t get pregnant and doesn’t need to be treated like a delicate princess. As if that wasn’t enough, the camp commander returns with a group of elite soldiers who will escort Carter to meet their leader. For the safety of his two lovers, Carter needs to play along, at least for a while.
The action really heats up in this third installment of the Pykh series, with just one concluding volume to go. With his newfound ability to communicate, Carter discovers that his alien mates’ culture is full of political discord, in large part due to the ongoing war with the invading insects. Carter resolves to do what he can to help, but he’s not sure it will be enough.
The story this time is told by four different people: Carter, his two alien mates “Pykh” and Siel, and Auk, an old comrade that Siel asks to help Carter form his “court.” Space Marine Carter is a very believable character. His reaction to the pampering his lovers and all the other aliens subject him to seems perfectly natural. While Carter and his mates have escaped the insects that enslaved them, he has a few episodes of PTSD, which is also a natural reaction to his enslavement.
As before, Pykh and Siel’s views help us to understand the aliens and their culture. Pykh retains his almost childlike curiosity as well as a playful personality, at least when it comes to his two lovers. He is also fiercely loyal to his two mates. On the surface, Pykh sometimes appears to be “simple” but he’s actually very smart. He often goes along with Carter and Siel because they’re more knowledgeable about the world, but he still has his own ideas and can be very forceful if he needs to be.
Siel is an experienced and formidable warrior. Or, at least, he was. His years enslaved at the hands of the insects has left him fighting against severe depression. Protecting and advising his two mates seems to be what helps him get through it. Siel asked Auk to help him form the “court” for Carter, something every omega in their culture has. Auk has spent most of his career as a scout, out in the jungle on his own for weeks at a time. He’s an irascible personality, so being on his own suits him. Auk seems to be a considerate lover when he is in camp, since he has several devoted younger lovers.
