As a superhero, Spotlight isn’t much more than a marketing gimmick for the corporation he works for, but he has his pick of men to spend the night with whenever he feels like it, which is often. Gavin is a scientist working for the Crusaders, the world’s top-tier superheroes. He knows Spotlight only by reputation, and what he hears makes him take an instant dislike to the man. When some mysterious force prevents everyone in the world from getting aroused, Gavin and Spotlight are thrown together to try to solve the problem.
“The Coming End” is an erotic send-up of the superhero genre. While the setup is outrageously silly, it is used to great effect. The writing takes it all seriously enough to weave a good story. This book is part of a collection all set in the same universe, but if you haven’t read any of the other stories from the author, you won’t be missing much. The world-building in this book is enough to set the scene.
It’s clear Spotlight is a flawed hero from the moment we meet him. As we get to know him, the true story of his origins becomes even more disturbing. Yet, he also becomes a more sympathetic character. For him, this is definitely a journey of self-discovery and redemption.
Gavin is a rather classic science nerd. There’s a possibility that he’s asexual, or you could say he just hasn’t met the right guy. Spotlight seems like exactly the wrong guy for Gavin, but opposites attract and all that. Gavin’s skills make him the true hero of the story, although it’s Spotlight that gets him where he needs to be and tries to protect Gavin.
Despite the premise, the heat level is more medium than hot. I'm not tagging it as erotica since there really is very little sex on the page.
