Nick hasn’t heard from Ben since their one night of passion, but that’s okay with him. Nick’s life has been a long string of one-night-stands with no commitments, and that’s the way he likes it. He still can’t get Ben out of his mind, though. Maybe he just needs more time, so a trip to Vancouver, Canada to liaise with an international team investigating money laundering might be just the thing. Ben can’t call Nick because he doesn’t have his number, since his phone was blown up in the case where they met. He thought there was something special between Nick and him, but if Nick doesn’t want to get in touch, Ben doesn’t want to chase him. When Ben’s friend Corey asks for help, Ben drops everything to fly out to Vancouver to lend a hand. What are the odds the two men will meet?
This second book of the Follow the Money series picks up a month or so after the end of By the Book, so you will want to have read that first story before this one. You may have thought, after the previous book, that Ben and Nick were a couple now, but thanks to miscommunication and self-doubts, they’re effectively starting over. It doesn’t help that their reasons for being in Vancouver end up overlapping, meaning that they once again end up clashing over Ben’s attempts to look into an active criminal investigation.
Once again, the narration alternates between Ben and Nick’s point of view. Ben is surprised by the way dominating Nick made things so hot for both of them. It’s a revelation, but not something he’s worried about. As before, once Ben gets presented with a puzzle, whether it’s accounts or crime, he is relentless in his pursuit of an answer, even if it puts him at risk.
Nick has a harder time coming to terms with what happened with Ben. He can’t have submissive feelings. He’s an FBI agent. Nick has other reasons to fear the kind of things Ben seems to want from him. We find our more about his past and his family as the story unfolds.
