Sam and Ulysses have taken their relationship to the next step by renting an apartment and moving in together. Things are far from settled, though, as Sam continues to attract unwanted attention from both government agents and the remnants of his grandfather’s team of scientists who were trying to create demigods. To complicate things, Ulysses’ brother Lazarus is back from service in Vietnam, and clearly has his own issues to deal with.

“Troth” continues the adventures of Sam, once doomed to become the reincarnation of the god Dionysus, and Ulysses, the man who saved him from that fate and became bonded to him in the process. It’s the bond which drives a wedge between the two in this story, as it starts to behave erratically.

Sam and Ulysses remain true to the characters we’ve come to know through the previous two books. Ulysses still has a strong drive to fix things, including the bond gone haywire. That doesn’t always sit well with Sam. Although no longer destined to be the vessel for Dionysus’ return to earth, Sam is not entirely human. He can’t quite stop worrying that Ulysses will eventually decide the simplest way to solve the challenges they face is to leave Sam.

The shadowy remnants of the group that tried to use Sam to return the ancient gods to earth remains the primary villans of the series. The guys seem to be getting close, but don’t quite get there in this installment. I’m hoping the next book, which appears to focus on Lazarus, will finally solve the mystery.

“Troth” is available from Smashwords or Amazon (commissionable link).
