An old enemy of the Daranii is once again probing the borders of their space. Talin and Jon are sent with a fleet of ships to take on the invaders. The expedition and its aftermath forces the Daranii to face some very uncomfortable ideas. It falls on Jon to help his life mate and the rest of Daran understand how to deal with failure and learn from their loss.

The long-running story of Johnathan “Jon” Thomsin continues in this second (or fifth, depending on how you count them) book about human Jon’s experiences first as a “sacrifice” given to Daran in exchange for peace with Earth, and then as the life mate of Daran’s chief warrior, Talin. The story this time builds steadily towards the battle that changes everything, leaving our two heroes to deal with the fallout.

In this book, we see the re-emergence of Johnathan, the captain. It’s a role he takes on reluctantly at first, but quickly adapts to it. It’s a side of the man we didn’t see in the first series, but it doesn’t really change the overall view we have of his character.

Jon and Talin continue to share a bond that can’t be broken. In this book, the pair are reminded more than once just how intertwined their lives are. It’s an interesting idea, a bond so strong that one will not survive the death of the other for long. The concept is quite sobering.
