Sunny has raised his daughter, Julie, on his own since her mother died in a car crash. Julie is everything to Sunny, so he doesn’t have much of a life outside of work and taking care of her. Now 15, Julie is old enough to want to earn some money of her own babysitting. She gets a referral from a friend for another single dad who needs someone to look after his young daughter a few days a week. Naturally, Sunny wants to meet the man before allowing Julie to take the job. Much to everyone’s surprise, the father turns out to be Jack, a man Sunny had an affair with ten years ago. Jack was in college at the time and the two parted when Jack graduated and got a job on the west coast.
“Fated Love” is a very short novelette that you’ll probably read in one sitting. It’s really just a day in the lives of two men that once had a connection. I would have liked a little more. Sunny’s past, in particular, is a little sketchy. It’s not clear how he ended up with a daughter.
In such a short story, there’s not much room for character development. Aside from their sketchy backstories, the two men are believable enough to enjoy the book. Some of the dialog, particularly with Julie, seemed uneven, but not enough to distract me from the story.
“Fated Love” is available from Smashwords or Amazon (commissionable link).
