Review - Fragments by Zen DiPietro

The second book of the Dragonfire Station series picks up right where the first book, Translucid, left off. Fallon has reunited with her team, although not her memories, and together they have set off to earth to try and solve the mystery of why her team was split up, and her memories seemingly erased.

This middle book in the series gives us a lot more insight into the main characters, although there’s no shortage of action as well. Fallon is a really complex personality, who gets more interesting the more we find out about her. She and her teammates have a very complex relationship as well. They are four people who have put their lives in each others’ hands for many years, too long to be mere coworkers. Their relationship is more like family, although at times a slightly incestuous one.

The story moves the plot along and sets the pieces and the players up for the third and final volume. The ending is not exactly a cliffhanger, but close enough to make it unthinkable not to read the next book to see what happens. This series is proving to be very solid story telling. Not only are the characters well developed and largely devoid of the common clichés of the genre, but the story line, while recognizable, is original, well crafted and meticulous.
