As a policeman, Red commands attention whenever he comes on a scene. It isn’t just his imposing bulk that people can’t help but notice, Red bears the scars of a car accident that took his parents’ lives when he was a teenager. So when he shows up at the scene of a near drowning, the offhand remark from cute lifeguard Terry is nothing he hasn’t heard before.

Terry has always used his looks to get what he wants. Only that hasn’t worked out too well for him lately. He left his last boyfriend James because the control freak was attempting to cut him off from all the people and activities that made him happy. It’s all made him re-evaluate what he thinks is really important. When Terry and Red cross paths again, it soon becomes apparent that James is more than a vindictive ex.

“Fire and Water” is an extremely sweet and sexy story. However, there’s just enough tension between the two men, and around them, to keep it from being at all sappy. Both Red and Terry have baggage. Red’s issues may be more obvious, but it’s Terry’s baggage in the form of James that threatens the budding relationship.

All this keeps the story moving along at a good pace, but not so fast that we don’t get to the know the characters in detail. It’s the characters that really make this story work. So much so that when you get to the rather predictable ending, you’ll still be a little sad to see the end of Red and Terry. “Opposites attract” seems to have been a theme of the recent reviews — entirely unintentionally — but in this case it really did work. The gap between Terry and Red isn’t so huge that it seems insurmountable, and while the series of coincidences that throws the two together is a bit too good to be true, it still serves to give the two men time to get to know each other naturally.

“Fire and Water” is available from All Romance Ebooks and Amazon.
