Review - First You Fall
My rating:
Kevin Conner is a high priced call boy who enjoys his work. The petite blond twink has a steady base of undemanding clients, and a drag queen pimp who carefully screens new customers. Kevin’s ‘job’ is ostensibly in aid of furthering his education in psychology, but with his attention deficit disorder it’s easy for Kevin to stay in the moment. Everything changes when Kevin’s friend and mentor falls to his death.
Review - The Dark Farewell
My rating:
Reporter David Flynn is on his way to Little Egypt. He wants to see how feelings run a year after the Herrin massacre, and it’s a good opportunity to pay his respects to Amy, the widow of his old mentor. Amy’s boarding house, where Flynn will stay, is full of eccentric characters, from the matronly Mrs Hoyt and her daughter Joan to the local doctor, Pearson. And then there’s Julian and his grandfather, who travel the small towns putting on shows where Julian pretends to talk to spirits.

Review - Fall Hard
My rating:
After eight months of recovery from a fall which killed his lover and nearly took his own life, Englishman Paul returns to Iceland to pick up the pieces of his academic career, and try to recover the memories of the year leading up to the accident. Although he lived and worked there for a year, Paul can’t remember his colleagues, the places he visited or even, most worrying of all, his lover Sven.

Review - Dark Waters
My rating:
Flein has an itch to travel, and he’s seen more of the world than just about any man alive. Then again, Flein is only half human. He is the offspring of one of the Norse gods who mated with a human, and staying on the move helps keep people from realizing that he doesn’t age and is in fact a thousand years old or more. His wanderings take him to a small village in the Scottish Highlands, where a series of rapes and murders have been blamed on a mysterious creature that inhabits the loch.
Review - The Master of Seacliff
My rating:
Andrew Wyndham dreams of escaping his mundane life of working in his aunt and uncle’s New York shop to become an artist in Paris. It’s the turn of the twentieth century, and the likes of Monet are shaking up the art world. When Andrew’s friend arranges for him to be the tutor for the son of wealthy Duncan Stewart, it seems he is well on his way to realizing his dream.

Review - The Elegant Corpse
My rating:
Roger Corso is a detective with the LAPD, and a more tightly wound individual would be hard to imagine. He could make Joe Friday look like a loose cannon and Felix Unger look like a slob (★). Part of that is just who he is, but there’s also a defensive wall around the part of him that still grieves for his dead lover. He also has to be on guard about his private life.

Review - Unnatural Selection Collection
My rating:
“Unnatural Selection Collection” is an omnibus edition collecting three novellas featuring DC Nick Guthrie, his fellow detectives and his friends, especially Dr Anton Marber. I should warn you that there’s an inevitable bit of ‘spoilers’ in recounting all three books in one go like this. I’ve been careful not to reveal the mysteries of each book, but it’s impossible, I think, to discuss what happens in each book without telling you what the state of the relationship between the two main characters is.

Review [sort of] - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
This movie came up the other day, in the very tangential way that things do on Twitter. I decided it might make a good topic for a blog post, since it is one of may favorite movies, which might help explain a few things. [caption id=“attachment_986” align=“alignright” width=“300” caption=“Original movie poster for the theatrical release.”][/caption] The 1997 movie actually is based on a book, which helps make this review a little less off-topic.
Review - Needful
My rating:
Another year or so has passed since the events of the last book, Games & Consequences, and things are not going well for Jerna and his family. His youngest daughter is fighting cancer while the older one is facing bullying at school. Love and honor compel Jerna to spend more time with his wife and children, and less time with his lover Ria. Ria feels lonely, and although he tries to understand Jerna’s situation, he can’t help but wonder if he can ever be really happy sharing Jerna with his wife and family.
