Kedar is captain of the Star Runner, a former military supply ship now working as a trading vessel on the outer reaches of the colonized worlds. When the ship is disabled in a dangerous sector, it’s attacked by pirates. Kedar and his all ex-military crew not only repel the attack but capture the pirate ship as well. While searching the ship for hiding pirates and salvage, Kedar finds a frightened young man in the medical bay. The young man, Rue, is a doctor who was conned into joining the crew, then effectively held prisoner once he figured out he signed on with pirates. Kedar’s species mates for life once they meet their destined partner, and he is instantly attached to Rue, who seems to be just the right fit for his desires.
This novella-length story starts a new series following the crew of the Star Runner, as the hardened veterans find their mates. It turns out the men share a similar kink, in that they want to be “daddies” to young men who are “littles”. Naturally, the captain is the first to find his mate, as Rue easily regresses into a little.
Kedar is from an alien species that mates for life and, rather conveniently, has precognitive abilities. It definitely serves him well as captain. We don’t get to know much detail about Kedar’s background, but there’s enough to believe he is the right alien for Rue.
Rue is a curious character. The circumstances that we meet him in make him very sympathetic. He’s clearly an intelligent young man with the skills to become a doctor, but once he trusts Kedar, which happens quickly, he easily regresses to be a “little.” Rue endears himself not only to the captain, but all the crew as well.
