After losing his mother in a terrible accident, Jason decides to leave his father’s practice where he treats supernatural creatures and set up as an ordinary veterinary doctor. Levi is an incubus, possibly one of the last of his kind now that his maker is dead. The maker’s last act was to extract a promise from Levi to find the only other surviving incubus. If Levi doesn’t fulfill his promise, he faces oblivion. He tracks the other incubus to the same small mountain town where Jason lives. Levi is attacked on his first night in town, and turns up severely injured on Jason’s doorstep, having mistaken Jason’s practice for his father’s. Despite turning away from magic and supernatural creatures, Jason can’t turn the fatally wounded Levi away.
“Infernal Hearts” is an unusual paranormal fantasy romance. Like many such stories, it starts with the premise that supernatural creatures such as vampires, faeries, and incubus are real, even though most humans aren’t aware of them. The difference stems from the fact that, while Jason and Levi aren’t exactly enemies, they have no basis for being friends. The circumstances of his mother’s death means Jason doesn’t trust magical creatures, and for some reason he is immune to the incubus’ powers. This proves a frustration for Levi, but also sparks his curiosity.
The narration alternates between Jason and Levi in clearly marked sections. Jason seems like an ordinary human caught up in the magical world at first, but as we get to know him, you’ll probably get the feeling that there’s more to Jason than he realizes. The evolution of Jason’s feelings for Levi seems quite natural and unforced.
Levi is a more complicated character to get to know. That’s clearly intentional, as even the incubus has incomplete memories and knowledge of his own kind. It does become clear quite early on that Levi is not the monster than other supernatural creatures make him out to be.
