For Melanian men, the ethereal, forest-dwelling Eth seem to exert some sort of strange force that drives them to want to possess and dominate the Eth sexually. Rylis encountered an Eth as a young boy. He secretly freed the slave rather than see it continue to be abused by his father. Years later, as commander of the Melanian army, Rylis leads his troops on a mission to investigate problems just outside the mysterious great forest. There, he encounters the same Eth again, only now, as an adult, Rylis seems unable to resist the urge to possess the other man.

This sequel to Wings is an epic saga covering a time span of more than 50 years. There are a few mentions of people and events from the first book, but you can easily read this story without having read the previous one. You won’t be missing much. As with other works by this author, be prepared for some non-consensual as well as dubious consent sex scenes.

The story is told entirely from Rylis’ point of view. We first meet him as a rather innocent child with an affinity for animals. The story then jumps ahead many years, when Rylis is now commander of the army and the designated heir to the throne. He’s definitely not so innocent any more but he still has memories of the Eth he set free. Those memories are tainted once Rylis succumbs to the possessive emotions the Eth engenders.

We only ever get to know the Eth, Tamrin, through Rylis’ eyes. He is unable to communicate in Rylis’ language for most of the story, so all we have to go on are his actions. The Eth is clearly the gentlest of souls, so much so that he is an outcast even among his own people. Tamrin is a very sympathetic character, although it takes until the very end for us to really understand him.
