Boston police officer Jason is badly injured when the undercover operation he was involved in almost went sideways. Now, both of the crime families he helped take down are out for his blood before he can testify. Staying in the hospital, where he should be, makes him a sitting duck, so the FBI moves him into a safe house under the watchful eye of Special Agent Phil Harland. He should be safe, except it looks like there’s a mole in the police or the FBI, or both, and it turns out Phil is Jason’s old high school rival. The pair end up on the run, not sure who they can rely on.
“Touch and GO” is a classic crime thriller with a bit of buddy road trip thrown in. Of course, in the best tradition of buddy stories, the two main characters are old enemies to begin with. They have to work together to survive the repeated attacks on their safety, and, naturally, that brings them closer together. It’s definitely a real page-turner as you can’t wait to find out what’s in store for the pair next.
The story is related entirely from Jason’s point of view. He’s a well-drawn character who is thoroughly believable. Boston police detectives are practically a standard archetype, but Jason is three-dimensional and not some cardboard cutout. His reaction to each new event feels entirely natural.
We get to know Phil through Jason’s eyes. To make the story work, his background ends up being a little far-fetched, but not impossible. Just improbable. Aside from that, he is also a well-drawn character that we can fully empathize with.
