Isaac is a trained assassin, although he has yet to kill anyone. He’s on his first assignment for the Undertaker, the man who has trained Isaac and many others since he was a young boy. The mission seems to go sideways, and Isaac is taken by the Queen of Swords, Argent, to a strange school the other students have dubbed Rogue Community College. There, he will learn about the other races with a view to becoming a Guardian, but the others don’t know Isaac’s secrets.

This book starts a new series set in the same fantasy universe as the Adam Binder series. It references many of the events and features some of the same characters as the first series, so you’d be better off if you started these books after having read the others.

The story is told entirely from Isaac’s point of view. He is a complicated young man at a crossroads. He has no memory of a life before he was taken by the Undertaker. His only family are the other boys he trained with. As a Phage, his skills are unique, since nobody has seen another one in a very long time.

The other students and professors are an eclectic mix of races and talents. Of them, Isaac finds himself drawn to Vran, a sea elf with a foreboding air about him. Their budding relationship helps Isaac find his path, but it is not without a high cost. Be warned, there’s a surprising turn of events near the end of the story that sets up the basis for the next books in the series.
