Pirate Captain Rojan has had his eye on Petrov for quite some time. He might be just a little bit obsessed with the duke who acts as bodyguard to the Crown Prince, now married to his half brother, the king. When the two are thrown together after Rojan is attacked, Petrov finds the pirate “infuriating,” but can’t seem to stay away from the man. Together, the pair try to track down the people trying to undermine the new king, which may be easier than surviving their hastily arranged nuptials.

“The Pirate’s Treasure” is set in a steampunk-ish fantasy world of magic, kingdoms, and pirates. It’s a world the author has apparently written several books about, starting with The Infidelity Clause. Although some characters from that book appear in this story, you can read it without missing too much. I’m speaking from experience since I didn’t know this was part of a series before reading it. It’s clear there are some backstories missing for some secondary characters, but not enough to make you feel like you’re missing much.

Rojan is a classic lovable rogue. A man who is much more than he seems, and someone people constantly underestimate to their regret. Rojan may seem rash, and he is, but he almost always knows what he’s doing. His obsession with Petrov seems somewhat out of character, but it’s something he indulges in without really expecting it to ever go anywhere.

Petrov is, in many ways, Rojan’s complete opposite. Petrov grew up in the royal castle. He was practically a brother to the Crown Prince. In contrast, Rojan grew up on the streets, using piracy as a way out. It’s definitely an opposites-attract kind of relationship, but over time we see that the mismatched pair share some common values.
