At the age of 20, Isa is a little old for the choir, but he does like singing. He likes Father Malcolm even more. Isa is desperate for the big priest to initiate him into the pleasures of the flesh. He’s seen what many of the other pastors and elders get up to with the male members of the seraglio, and Isa wants to experience those things for himself. Isa comes up with a crazy plan that he thinks will show the Father he is ready. The plan works. Sort of. Suddenly, all the senior pastors' attention is on Isa. They think they know what he wants, but Isa has a hard time contradicting them.

This sequel to The Father takes place in the same religious cult where sex is considered sacred and giving oneself to an elder or one of the pastors is considered a blessing. The main characters from that first book play important secondary roles in this story, so it’s best if you’ve read “The Father” before picking up this book. You’ll also be more prepared for the strange mindset of the cult members. In any event, you’ll want to read the content warnings to be sure this book is for you.

The story is told entirely from Isa’s point of view, except for the short epilogue. Like many a young man on a quest to lose his virginity, Isa’s brains are in his pants. The kind of stunt Isa pulls is usually played for laughs, but in this case things take a darker turn. We already knew from the first book that the cult was very odd, but in this story we find out some things that make it even more sinister.

We only get to know Malcolm through Isa’s adoring eyes. Aside from his physical description, Isa doesn’t know anything about the object of his affection. The two don’t spend much time talking. Father Malcolm doesn’t even appear much in the story except to swoop in and save Isa from the clutches of a less scrupulous pastor. The one thing we can see of Malcolm’s personality is that, within the strange morals of the cult, he has integrity.
