Darcel grew up on the streets, stealing food and doing whatever was needed when necessary. A chance encounter with Prince Alasar of Rais brings the young man to court, where he grows to love the prince, even though he knows there’s no chance the two could ever have a relationship. The kingdom is under attack by “barbarians” along its border. Seeking a peaceful solution, Darcel attempts to contact the invaders, but is captured. His eyes are opened to the truth about these people seeking a new homeland, but the real awakening comes when Darcel returns to Rais and is imprisoned by his beloved Alasar. Even when Alasar appears to have freed him, it’s yet another betrayal.
“Betrayal” is quite the rollercoaster adventure following a young man on a quest that ultimately allows him to find a true home. You might, as I did at first, assume things would end far differently than they do. The story line does set up the ending such that it’s the one you’re probably hoping for by the time it arrives.
The story is related mostly from Darcel’s point of view. He is quite a courageous young man. In classic underdog fashion, Darcel is totally unaware of his own worth. It seems that only the “barbarian” prince sees Darcel for what he truly is.
As in many of this author’s stories, there’s at least the suggestion of non-consensual sex. Darcel is a small man, and he seems to get picked up and carried around a lot, which some people can find a little off-putting. With those caveats in mind, this is an action-packed story full of drama and romance.
