Review - Ganymede: Abducted by the Gods by Wendy Rathbone

In Greek mythology, Ganymede was a young man or boy born in the area that would become Troy. He was supposedly so beautiful that the god Zeus, chief among all the immortals, kidnaps and brings Ganymede to Olympus to serve as his cup-bearer and become immortal himself. This retelling of the classic story is given from Ganymede’s point of view, and puts a science fiction spin on the tale. Although not original, the idea that the gods of Greek mythology were aliens from a technologically advanced civilization is still well played.

It’s the ultimate opposites-attract romance: Shy corporate climber Paul, who isn’t in the closet but isn’t quite comfortable being too far out of it, is hit on by go-go boy Ben, a tattooed young man from a working class family who is definitely out and proud. Is there any chance of a relationship between two so very different men, or is the more or less homeless Ben just looking for a place to bed down?

Mild-mannered trader Cabot Layne agrees to under-take another mission for Chief of Security Fallon of Dragonfire Station. The task seems simple enough: locate someone who is also a well known trader, who was helping Fallon’s team, yet has dropped out of communication. To help him out, Cabot once again enlists the aid of his old friend Omar, and reluctantly Omar’s sister Nagali, who is also Cabot’s ex-wife. Fallon sends one of her team, Peregrine, as well, making for a rather strange quartet.

Although borne into the royal family of Slorex, Sūnder has always been an outcast, whom his real father cannot even publicly acknowledge because he is Faelyn, a magical being commonly believed to be destined to turn evil. He has spent his life trying to prove people wrong. Gabriel is an earthling who was abandoned by his parents at the age of 16 and has spent his life avoiding close relationships with anyone who might hurt him again.

Review - Sin Against the Race by Gar McVey-Russell

Kindly note: The author generously provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Alfonso starts a new year a college in a deep funk. Carleton, his cousin, best friend and mentor, died of complications from AIDS over the summer, Carleton’s close friend Eddie is gay-bashed in the local park, and the clinic Carleton helped found is destroyed by fire just before classes start. On top of all that, Alfonso is struggling to reconcile his own identity as a gay man of color with his father’s expectations of him.
