Spoiler alert: If you haven’t read the first installment of this series, then you had best stop reading this review now, since we can’t really discuss the second book without reavealing how the first left off.

This second volume of the Chaos Station series picks up just a few weeks after the end of “Chaos Station”. Zed is trying to settle in as a member of the crew, but everyone, especially his lover Flick, knows that he is living on borrowed time. The poison that Earth’s defense forces injected into Zed to create a super-soldier is eating away at his brain, and it’s only a matter of time before he loses the ability to tell friend from foe, and then dies.

On top of all they have to deal with, there’s also the Agrius gang, which still seems bent on exacting a heavy retribution for the run-ins the crew has had with them in the past. With everything going on, the crew of the Chaos is running out of options.

“Lonely Shore” builds on the solid foundation set up in the first book, giving us more insight into the members of the crew of the Chaos, as well as some clues about what the major arc of the series might ultimately be. While Flick and Zed are the main characters, epic stories like this require a cast of characters that we can root for, and through this second book we get to know the rest of the crew members even more, from the captain who seems to know Flick better than he knows himself, to the doctor and the alien pilot, Qek. All are more than just background to the main players, and chances are by the end of this book you will be as curious about what happens to them as the fates of Zed and Flick.

“Lonely Shore” is available from Amazon.
