Neil Travers and Curtis Marin are back in this third installment of the Hellgate saga. The action picks up soon after the end of the last story, Deep Sky. Neil and Curtis are enjoying a little well-earned R&R, but it doesn’t last long. Mark Sherrat’s son Leon is in trouble. The Resalq has been working undercover on the rebel world Omaru, where the Colonial Fleet blockade is running up against stiff resistance. Neil and Curtis are tapped to lead the mission to get Leon, and the device he has ‘acquired’, out and through the blockade.
“Cry Liberty” continues the action-packed drama of this epic six-part series. While there are still several sub-plots at work, this volume seems much more focused on the main plot line involving the rescue of Leon Sherrat. It also felt like there were fewer new significant characters introduced this time around. Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking, but it seems like the ensemble cast of main characters is now almost complete.
There are still quite a few new characters in this story, even if they appear to just be coincidental to the plot. The author is rather good at sketching out a person in a few lines, enough so that we can get a good picture of them in our mind, even if we don’t know their full back story. This is a big factor in helping to keep the story fast-paced, yet enjoyable.
In many ways, it feels like this is the installment where the story hits its stride. Most, if not all, of the major characters have been introduced, and so the action can start moving along at a quicker pace.
“Cry Liberty” is available from Amazon and Smashwords.
