Camulus is an immortal being. Humans who have glimpsed his true form call beings like him angels, although given Camulus’ dark wings, perhaps he is a fallen angel. He has traveled from world to world, played the part of king and god, but now finds that a little boring. What he needs is a new pet, a devotee who will dedicate himself to serving the ‘angel’ in every way.

Adam is a young man who knows his desires are on the wrong side of the dystopian society he lives in. In Adam’s world, it’s okay to be gay, but being a submissive who likes receiving pain from his master is seen as sick. He risks being arrested and sent to a rehabilitation clinic to go in search of a dom that can give him what he needs, and that’s when he encounters Camulus. Is the strange man exactly what he needs?

The first chapter of “Connection: Angel’s Pet” is a bit of a heavy-handed introduction to the world which Adam inhabits. It’s a rather obvious and ham-fisted commentary on modern America, but plow through it and the story does get better. The relationship between Adam and Camulus is very sweet, with very little drama. Adam does whatever Camulus wants, which pleases the angel. There is a lot of talk of the “training” Camulus puts Adam through, but very few details are given.

While “Connection: Angel’s Pet” is a pleasant enough read, it didn’t really come alive, for me. There is a lot of inner dialog from all the characters, but not much actual discussion. I’m not a big fan of the whole “showing versus telling” school of criticism, but this is a good case where more actual dialog and descriptions of what is actually happening may have added to the story. The somewhat clinical nature of the writing also helped keep me from connecting with the characters. The terms ‘sadist’ and ‘masochist’ are almost always used, rather than the more common terms like dom and sub. I’ve actually never, ever, heard of anyone in the kink community refer to themselves or a submissive as a masochist. Pain slut, yes, masochist, no.

“Connection: Angel’s Pet” is available from Amazon.
