Review - Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell
My rating:
Tennal is a “reader,” someone with the ability to sense the thoughts of other people. He's more powerful than people realize and goes to unhealthy extremes to try and quiet the constant buzz in his head. Tennal is also the nephew of the Orshan head of state, and his activities are a constant source of embarrassment. In a desperate attempt to get him under control, his aunt makes arrangements for Tennal to be conscripted into the military and “synced” to a powerful “architect.

Review - The Two Princesses by Beryll Brackhaus and Osiris Brackhaus
My rating:
Yaden and Ivan have largely recovered from their harrowing year trapped in Calarni space, thanks mostly to the love and support of their family. The missions they've undertaken since returning have not been stressful, mostly helping planets deal with disasters that require Yaden's special talents, but not very dangerous. Then word comes to the Lotus Pavillion that the Duke of Goa is trading in N'Bosoti artifacts. The mission requires the pair to go undercover in a way that threatens to open old wounds for Ivan.
Review - The Alien Soldier by Eryn Ivers
My rating:
Patrick has served in the Klah'Eel army all his adult life. He's very loyal to the nation that raised him, but he's been looked down on by most of his fellow soldiers and commanding officers for his entire career for being “just” a weak human. His latest general is determined to see Patrick fail. To that end, he puts Patrick in charge of a group of new recruits, misfits recruited from the slums of Klah's moon that nobody expects to get through the trials before battle.

Review - Vale by C.J. Dragon
My rating:
Far into the future, a generation ship from Earth finds a planet with the right atmosphere, plenty of water, and an established ecosystem, but no intelligent life, or so they think. It's only well after the settlements are established that the humans discover the planet is taken care of by an omniscient guardian. The guardian, having studied the Earthlings, is willing to let them stay, but only if they abide by his decisions regarding the use of the planet's resources.

Review - My Cameron by M.A. Innes
My rating:
The alien invasion didn't go at all like anyone expected from the Hollywood movies. A group of squid-like beings from a planet with a dying sun showed up one day and politely asked if they could stay. They settled among humans and began the long process of trying to integrate into human society. Cameron's alien neighbor, George, keeps flirting with him, but Cameron isn't sure the alien is serious, and his job keeps him very busy.

Review - The Price of Paradise by Meraki P. Dark
My rating:
Please note: this is one of those stories that's hard to review without giving away a few (hopefully minor) spoilers about the plot. On a future planet Earth ravaged by climate change and solar storms, most of what's left of humanity lives in purpose-built "hives" that protect them from the toxic atmosphere. Everyone works for the good of the hive. Around their twentieth birthday, everyone is tested for their genetic desirability.
Review - Before the Shutdown by Mack J. Lou
My rating:
Kindly note: The author generously offered a free copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review. By the mid-22nd century, the earth is in the midst of drastic climate change and also suffering from random gravitational anomalies. Most cities and even whole countries have died. In their place are new sophisticated cities, which are mostly underground and protected by advanced technology. The main responsibility for keeping everything running rests on a small team of highly trained technicians who use immersive technologies to network with the environmental controls as well as each other.

Review - Tinman by C.J. Dragon
My rating:
Astin feels lucky to have gotten a job on the moon. The company that runs the mining operation may not give a damn about the people making it work, and living conditions may be spartan, but it beats dying of starvation, which was where Astin and most other people on Earth were headed. Astin's nickname among his coworkers is “Tinman.” It's a play on his name as well as a mild jibe at the perception that the man doesn't show his emotions.

Review - The Uncanny Adventures of Adam Honey by Lex Baker
My rating:
Adam Honey is orphaned on his sixth birthday. He is sent to an orphanage where another boy, DJ, claims to have known him “forever.” The two become friends and grow up largely insulated from the problems of the outside world, where environmental disasters signal a dying planet. On coming of age, Adam and DJ leave the orphanage to make their way in the world. The pair become lovers. Adam becomes a policeman, and DJ a professor.

With the help of Donato's butler Jenko, Misha and Ayo have escaped the mayhem engulfing Davlova on Donato's boat. The question is, where to go? Jenko has family in Deliphine, so with no better idea, the trio head across the sea to the big city on the coast of the mainland. Before they even dock, Ayo begins acting strangely.
