Review - Drums in the Rain by J.C. Owens

The rebellious incursion into one of Anrodnes’ neighbors instigated by Raine’s brothers has been quashed, and the brothers have paid with their lives. Now Prince Zaran can return return to the capital, and bring the banished concubine, and trained assassin, Hredeen with him. Nobody knows how the emperor will react to being reunited with his former favorite, not even the Chosen, Raine, who stands to lose the most. There’s more at stake than just feelings, the War Guild seems bent on bringing down the Anrodnes empire.

Review - Night of Rain by J.C. Owens
My rating:
Raine may be the chosen, destined to spend his life bonded to the Emperor Taldan, but he’s not sure the man truly accepts him, nor does he really know what role he will be able to play in the court. Meanwhile, Raine’s brothers back in Odenar have gone ahead with their plans to invade neighboring Bhantan and are killing and looting their way to the peaceful country’s valuable mines. Taldan’s brother Zaran is in hot pursuit of the invaders, and ambassador Isnay is trying to smooth things out with Bhantan’s new king.

As the youngest of four brothers ruling a remote province of the Anrodnes empire, not much is expected of Raine. Unlike his big brutish siblings, Raine is lithe and intellectual. He’s suffered enough beatings at the hands of his brothers to do whatever they demand, no matter how crazy the idea may seem. Their latest scheme involves getting Raine selected as the “Chosen” for the crown prince, a position that means he would be bonded for life to the future Emperor.

As the youngest son of a powerful and ruthless lord, Dradin is seen by his own family as more or less surplus to requirements. His fair looks and slight build make him the target of bullying, even by his brother Vax. Yet, despite it all, Dradin has not developed the cruel streak that his family is known for. He treats his young servant fairly and has a reputation for fair dealing when looking after his father’s estates.
Review - Soulseeker by J.C. Owens
My rating:
Rian’s life is not exactly that of a story-book prince. He is abused sexually and physically by his brother the king, with almost no hope of escaping. The last person to try and help him was mercilessly slaughtered right in front of him. After his latest attempt to flee the country, the king hires foreign mercenaries to watch over him. The Hawks are known as fierce and ruthless warriors, but they are also a deeply spiritual people.

Review - Wishes
My rating:
Auri is a young man determined to go places. He has risen through the ranks in the service of the Empire without the aid of any family connections, and now he is a first lieutenant on a diplomatic starship. Auri has gotten where he is by being stern and demanding. He gets things done. But there’s nobody on his current assignment that he can call a friend. Even his own captain thinks he is a little too uptight.
