Rupert doesn’t want to get married. He doesn’t want to change anything about his life of hunting parties. At a ball celebrating the marriage of another royal, Rupert spots Winter across the room. The diminutive young prince is opulently dressed and flitting from one seemingly frivolous conversation to the next, a veritable “peacock” of a man.

Odd, because his best friend is a large lizard who terrorizes the stable boys. So, Remy is perplexed when Crown Prince Xavier offers a marriage contract for Remy to his father. Remy developed a crush on Xavier when he was just fifteen years old, but his clumsy attempt to seduce the Crown Prince was brutally rebuffed.

With three older brothers, the king already has an heir and two spares, so getting married off to a foreign royal to create an alliance is the best Prince Caspian can hope for. Only, he didn’t consider that the foreign royal would be a man, even if Nikolas is a Crown Prince. Nikolas is aware of Caspian’s feckless womanizing reputation, but the benefits to his country from the marriage contract makes it a good deal, and he has ensured the agreement has all the standard clauses to get him out of the marriage if Caspian doesn’t live up to the terms, which Nikolas figures will take six months at most.

Pirate Captain Rojan has had his eye on Petrov for quite some time. He might be just a little bit obsessed with the duke who acts as bodyguard to the Crown Prince, now married to his half brother, the king. When the two are thrown together after Rojan is attacked, Petrov finds the pirate “infuriating,” but can’t seem to stay away from the man. Together, the pair try to track down the people trying to undermine the new king, which may be easier than surviving their hastily arranged nuptials.
