Love for the Cold-Blooded, or The Part-Time Evil Minion's Guide to Accidentally Dating a Superhero
by Alex Gabriel
It's a not-so-guilty not-so-secret that I have a penchant for quirky titles. It probably started with Dwarf Rapes Nun; Flees in UFO/a Novel of Journalism, and then there was The Aerodynamics of Pork, which introduced me to a writer who went on to give us several more great reads. So, it was almost a given that I would read “Love for the Cold-Blooded…” even before knowing what it was about. Fortunately, my little weakness didn't let me down.
Patrick West may be the son of a famous super-villain, or “challenger” as they prefer to be called, but he has no ambitions to take over the world, at least not by force. His dream is to be an urban planner, or designer, and change the world in that way. He's earning money for his university education by working nights at the estate of reclusive millionaire scientist Nick Anderson, who also happens to be the superhero the world knows as Silver Paladin. Pat likes his job, even though the employer he has never met in person seems to have odd tastes in food, at odd hours of the night.
When the house AI passes along Nick's request to “send up a guy”, Pat thinks perhaps the man just wants to meet him. It's not until it's too late that he realizes Nick was expecting a high class call boy. To say things “get complicated” is a massive understatement.
“Love for the Cold-Blooded…” is a wonderful send up of the whole superhero genre. It never takes itself too seriously but still manages to deliver a good story. The tale is told from Patrick's point of view, and the author has developed a very consistent - and very funny - voice for him that reflects the young man's view of the world. The foundation for the book may be complete fantasy, but Patrick comes across as a very real person, which is why you'll probably find yourself rooting for him in the rather sweet romance that develops between him and Nick.
This book may not have anything profound to say, but it might well be the most enjoyable read you'll have had for quite some time. This is definitely an author I'll be reading more of.
“Love for the Cold-Blooded…” is available from Amazon.
